MakerBot 3D Printers
MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D Printer
The MakerBot 3D printer is a desktop 3D printer that you assemble yourself which gets you up and running in no time at all to give you your own rapid prototyping and manufacturing capability. Most mainstream 3D printers are very expensive leaving them outside the budget of most hobbyists or consumers. The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic is a breakthrough in 3D printing technology in that it is an automatic 3D printer. All the other 3D printers that you can buy can only do one thing at a time while the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer is designed to be able to print model after model automatically. The MakerBot printer comes in a kit which you assemble and connect to your PC and quickly makes your home or office a personal manufacturing facility.
The MakerBot Automated Build Platform is step forward in 3D printing, which has been improved since its first iteration. Since the CupCake CNC 3D printer the build platform has been made larger and now allows you to have a print queue where your machine will clear the build surface between builds by printing, then ejecting. This means that the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic can print models one after another, and turns your MakerBot into a small-scale high-production factory which sits on your desk. The best thing about it, is that the MakerBot is completely automated: you just have to click print, and the machine does all the work for you printing model after model with no interruptions.
The heart of the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic is the 3D print head, or extruder, which has undergone many hours of development and testing. This research has produced an extruder which is extremely reliable, and very simple to maintain. A high-torque NEMA 17 stepper motor powers the Thing-O-Matic extruder which improves print quality and reduces post-processing of your builds. This will save you time and ultimately reduces the manufacturing costs of your models.
The beauty of the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic printer is that it connects to your PC through a standard USB port. Load your model’s 3D data file, in standard .STL format, and hit print – the desktop 3D printer will self-detect its position and start printing immediately. The new MakerBot Thing-O-Matic kit comes with the latest Gen4 3D printer electronics which have been designed to make the kit easier to put together. There’s also full endstop support so that you never need to touch the XYZ axes ever again. As soon as the 3D data is loaded you can hit print, and the Thing-O-Matic MakerBot 3D printer will automatically home itself, heat up, and begin printing.
MakerBot Model Materials
The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic prints 3D models using ABS plastic available in many different colors, both in 3mm and 1.75mm diameters. Water soluble PVA material is also available to allow you to print support structures in your models which can later be removed.
The MakerBot Thingyverse
With the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic there’s no need to design your own models from scratch or be a CAD expert, as the Thingyverse is a repository of hundreds of model designs. There’s whistles, rockets, toys and chess pieces and lots more different projects to get you going with the exciting world of 3D printing and desktop manufacturing.
