World’s First 3D Printed Rifle is Upgraded to Fire 14 Shots without Failure

The 3D printed "Grizzly 2.0" rifle can now fire multiple shots without breaking

The Canadian who created the world’s first 3D printed rifle has improved his design after the first version failed after firing only one shot.

The new version of the rifle, named the “Grizzly 2.0″, has now been shown in a Youtube video to fire 14 rounds before suffering damage to the barrel. The rifle is a bit awkward to use with each reloading requiring the barrel to be removed, the spent casing forced out before a fresh .22 round can be loaded.

“Matthew” from British Columbia told The Verge that he improved on the first design by using 50 percent more material in the barrel, increasing the size of the receiver (the part that holds the firing mechanism), and adding groves to the inside of the barrel, called rifling, to improve its accuracy.

Matthew was so confident of the success of his improvements that he hand fired the first three shots, as shown in the above video, rather than secure the rifle in a vise for remote firing. However, he does resort to remote firing using a string attached to the trigger for later shots and this proved to be a wise move as the rifle failed on the 14th shot.

Matthew prints the rifle parts in ABS+ plastic using a Stratasys Dimension 1200ES industrial 3D printer that he has access to as he is employed as a tool maker for the construction industry.

The “Grizzly” rifle is a development of Defense Distributed’s Liberator pistol design which was the first 3D printed firearm. The design files for that weapon were posted on the internet for others to improve upon which has obviously had the desired effect. Matthew intends to also post his rifle design on the internet later in the summer but as Defense Distributed found, they were forced to take down their gun’s plans shortly afterwards.
