eBay has launched a new iOS app that lets you buy custom 3D printed goods direct from your phone, it’s called eBay Exact.
Available from the Apple App Store the app features products from MakerBot, Sculpteo and Hot Pop Factory. Only about 20 products are available at the moment, including cell phone cases and jewelry, but this number will undoubtable grow.
“Shoppers today not only want to buy items anytime, anywhere through mobile devices, but they also want to be able to personalize their purchases,” Steve Yankovich, Vice President of Innovation and New Ventures for eBay, said in a statement. “eBay Exact brings these two desires into one shopping experience.”
The eBay app allows users to buy their custom 3D printed item direct from their partners with Paypal (naturally) and the items will be shipped out within 7 to 14 days. Items cost anywhere from $9 for a iPhone case to a metal ring that costs $350.
Many items can be customized to the user’s requirements, including the design, color and material that it is 3D printed from and they can also feature “engraving” or even a photo.
eBay are not the first major online retailer to muscle their way into the 3D printing world, Amazon have already launched a 3D printer store which sells hardware and consumables. As opposed to Amazon, eBay’s offering is a 3D printing service for customizable goods, similar to Shapeways. But with the might of eBay it might prove to be too much competition for Shapeways or perhaps before too long they might appear as a partner in the eBay Exact service.
