Makerbot launched the Replicator 2 a little while ago and to cater for customer demand they have just opened their new factory last week. Gizmondo managed to snag a guided tour of the south Brooklyn facility.
The 50,000 square-feet factory is staffed by one hundred “productors” who assemble each Replicator by hand. Makerbot seem to be trying to develop a culture around their brand, in the same vein as the “Googler”.
There are no robots in this factory, nor are there any big 3D printers printing out small 3D printers which is a little disappointing.
There are two stages of assembly for each printer, which then undergo a batch of testing steps before being boxed up and shipped to the customer.
MakerBot are pushing the limits of the Replicator 2 with a research department called the BotFarm where new objects are printed to see exactly what the machine can do.
